My hands are stiff from practicing calligraphy for a few hours this evening but I’ve made it a goal to try and get a post written. I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything-well, except for a random comic-and part of that has been the struggle with keeping up with what I thought I was looking to do here at SCL. The challenge also seems to be that lack of focus, that struggle to find a specific “niche”. I just like to do so many things! Why couldn’t I hunker down and take on one or a few?
A couple months ago I stumbled onto the answer. It’s called being a multi-potentialite. I was trying out the new moon ritual in the book Lunar Abundance (more on that here) with the intention of seeking focus. It was literally a day or two later when I had a link to a TED talk pop up in my Inbox. This featured the creator of the blog Puttylike, Emilie Waynick, who presented a novel concept to me, some individuals are capable of having more than one true calling.
Judging by the comments on the video page I’m not the only one. Seriously, given it’s YouTube the number of positive comments is astonishing.
So I took the idea to heart and starting listing everything I was and want to do.
- Currently I’m a:
- Physician Assistant
- Intuitive Painter
- Gluten Free Baker
- Cake Designer
- New Mom
- Avid Book Reader
- And I want to Explore:
- Digital Painting
- Graphic Design
- Webcomic Creation
It’s quite a list as she can see. Hence my struggle with focusing in a blogging world that emphasizes niches. But here’s the thing, why should I be like everyone else? As much as I like blogs that focus on something I don’t mind exploration and variety.
Take Boho Berry for instance. Kara Benz started out focusing on Bullet Journaling, in fact that’s how I stumbled onto her site through Pinterest about four years ago. But over time she’s evolved and has now started to had digital journaling to her site. Based on comments you would think she had committed a cardinal sin by doing this! Personally, I didn’t mind. I’ve struggled to maintain a bullet journal feeling the pressure for perfection and not ruining the blank page. But with digital paper there doesn’t seem to be this fear. I’ve recently started using one of the digital journals she sells on her site. I’m finding it to be a great alternative since I have a 10″ iPad Pro now.
So I took another look at my list of things and saw that everything still fits under my conception of A Semi-Convenient Life. There are still underlying themes of art making, recipes, farming and lifestyle. I decided that while there seems to be a wide variety here, there is still room for everything! It’s time to stop facing my fears of being too random and changing focus and embrace the possibilities of living a multi-faceted life.
Be on the lookout for tons of variety now as I chronicle my many varied and exciting adventures!
